Privacy Policy

SpeakPair ("we", "us", "the app") is a language exchange platform that matches adult users for short one-on-one video conversations. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
1. Who we are

2. What we collect
When you sign up:
- Email address (for authentication)
- Name (display name; you choose)
- Date of birth (to verify the 18+ age requirement)
- Native language and languages you want to practice
- Optional bio
When you use the app:
- Call session metadata: who you matched with, when, duration
- Ratings you give and receive (1–5 stars + "talk again" preference)
- Reports and blocks
- Streak data (consecutive practice days)
- Daily talk-time aggregates
- AI Coach (voice practice): a scorecard derived from a transcript of what you said (grammar, vocabulary, fluency, the specific mistakes you made) and a short recap of the conversation, stored to personalise your next session
- Speak Sprint (speaking game): the transcribed text of your spoken answers and your per-round scores
We do NOT record or store the audio of your 1:1 calls — they are peer-to-peer through Daily.co and we have no access to the media stream. For the AI Coach and Speak Sprint, your speech is converted to text in real time so it can be scored; we store that text (above) and the providers in Section 5 process the audio, but we do not keep the audio itself.
3. How we use it
- To match you with another adult who speaks the language you want to practice
- To enforce safety rules (block list, bad-rating exclusion, reports)
- To show your progress (streak, daily goal, history)
- To respond to support requests
4. Camera and microphone
The app uses your microphone (and camera, for video) in three places: 1:1 video calls, AI Coach voice sessions, and the Speak Sprint speaking game.
- 1:1 calls: streams are peer-to-peer via Daily.co's WebRTC and are not stored on our servers.
- AI Coach: your audio is streamed to our speech-to-text, language, and voice providers (Section 5) to power the live conversation, then discarded — we keep only the resulting scorecard / recap text.
- Speak Sprint: your speech is transcribed by your device's built-in speech recognizer (Apple Speech / Google), which may process the audio on Apple's or Google's servers; we receive only the resulting text.
We do not store your raw audio in any of these cases. Permissions are managed by your device OS; you can revoke them at any time in iOS or Android settings.
5. Third parties
We share data with:
- Supabase — authentication, database, realtime infrastructure
- Daily.co — video infrastructure (peer-to-peer media) and the AI Coach voice agent (Daily Bots / Pipecat Cloud)
- Anthropic (Claude) — powers the AI Coach conversation and scores your AI Coach and Speak Sprint answers (receives transcribed text)
- Deepgram — speech-to-text for the AI Coach
- Cartesia — text-to-speech (the AI Coach's voice)
- Apple / Google speech recognition — transcribes your speech in Speak Sprint at the operating-system level (audio may be processed on their servers; transcription only)
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) — push notifications, only if you enable streak reminders
Each provider handles your data under their own privacy policy. We do not sell your data to advertisers or any third party.
6. Data retention
- Account data is retained while your account is active.
- Call session metadata and ratings are kept for 90 days, then anonymized.
- Reports are kept for 2 years for legal compliance.
- Logs are kept for 30 days then deleted.
7. Account deletion
You can request account deletion by emailing support@speakpair.com (see speakpair.com/delete-account). All linked data (profile, ratings, streaks, blocks) is removed within 30 days. Call session metadata is anonymized rather than deleted to preserve other users' rating history.
8. Children
SpeakPair is for users 18 years and older only. Accounts created by anyone under 18 will be terminated as soon as detected. We do not knowingly collect data from minors.
9. Your rights
You may:
- Request a copy of your data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your account and data
- Withdraw consent for optional features (e.g., notifications)
Email support@speakpair.com to make a request. We respond within 30 days.
10. Security
Data in transit is encrypted (TLS). Database access is restricted by row-level security; only the account owner and authorized SpeakPair staff can access account data. We are not liable for breaches caused by third-party providers — they have their own security commitments.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. Material changes will be announced in the app and the "Last updated" date will be revised. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the new policy.
12. Law enforcement
If we receive a valid legal request from a competent authority, we may share account data and call metadata. We do not share data without a valid request.
